Magento 1 End of life

Magento has officially announced that all versions of Magento 1 will become End-of-life on June 30, 2020.

Your current installation of Magento won't stop working from this date if you don’t take action, but Adobe will not continue to fix security patches, bugs and release new functions to Magento 1 after this date.

There is a few reasons to for you to upgrade to a newer Magento Platform:

Avoid security breaches

According to recent research by the Ponemon Institue on what data breaches really cost, it is stated that the average number is 3.9 million USD per breach globally. The root cause analysis on the breaches show that 50% are caused by malicious or criminal activity, and the rest by system glitches and human error with 25% each.

In the long term the concerns should be more about reputation and the trust from your customers. The study shows that 57% lost trust on the company after a data leak and 31% of the people terminated their relationship of the company.

Get new features

Adobe will not continue to release new features as they will focus entirely on the newer versions of the platform. These features can include things that your competition will have, and it will also affect the eco-system around the Magento 1 platform. This could mean that your favorite plugin will stop being updated by the maintainer and the support for these plugins will probably disappear as well.

Use a better platform

A lot of effort has been put into Magento 2 that will increase page speed and this is a booster for your conversion rate. Since the traffic from mobile devices are increasing this has also been handled better in the new Magento platform with support for Progressive Web Apps which helps you sell in social channels when your web shop has the feel of a native app on the customers device.
